Contemporary Chinese Film

This course focuses on the development of Chinese cinema since the mid-1980s, focusing on commonly occurring themes and the use of technique. Chinese film is discussed in its own cultural context, but as a western art form, it is compared to western cinema as well. Lectures and work will be done in English; films will be shown in the original language with subtitles.
