Synthesis, and design of machine elements (design of screws, fasteners, and connections; design of welded, brazed, and bonded joints; mechanical springs; bearings; gears; shafts; design of clutches, brakes, couplings, and flywheels); theories of failure, stress concentrations, fatigue life, and thermal stresses; consideration of economics and safety; projects in creative mechanical design; design case studies.
