An examination of the nature of international society (nationalism, state sovereignty, balance of power) and the sources of conflict and tension among nation states. After a consideration of the elements of power (geopolitical, economic, ideological, demographic, and technological), deals with the role of international organization and law, collective security and regionalism as "controls" on the use of power.
