Students learn about the history and sociological scholarship of social movements, primarily in 20th and 21st Century North America. Movements earlier in history, originating in other parts of the world, and movements with a global scale are included, such the Civil Rights Movement, the Women's Movement, the LGBTQ movement, and Black Lives Matter. Students apply course material to their own empirical and personal observations of social movements through a guided project.
