Detailed information about this program

Alabama Certified Landscape Professional All state issued plant setters (SLP), ornamental & turf pest control (OTPS) and landscape design (LD) licenses are still required to legally practice in the profession. The ALCLP exam cannot be taken in lieu of the Alabama state regulatory mandated licensing exams. The Alabama Certified Landscape Professional Program (ALCLP), based on the program developed in Georgia by the Georgia Green Industry Association and the University of Georgia, offers landscape professionals the opportunity to be recognized as the "best in their field" by mastering the Alabama Certified Landscape Professional test. Successfully used in Georgia since 1993, the program here is in its infancy, and marketing materials for those who pass the program are available to help you announce your achievement to your client base. In the State of Alabama, if you are treating turf & ornamentals with pesticides and/or are installing plant materials for a fee, you are required to have state issued regulator licenses issued by the Alabama Department of Agriculture. They are the categories of Setting of Landscape Plants (SLP), and / or Ornamental Turf and Pest Control (OTPS). Successfully testing for these two licenses illustrates a basic proficiency in the field, and they allows you to purchase the related Professional Services and Nursery Dealer Permits. The ALCLP, administered as a joint project of the Alabama Nursery and Landscape Association and Alabama Extension, is a voluntary testing program that acknowledges those in the landscape profession who are willing to test their skills at the next level: to show to themselves, their colleagues and their customers that they have a thorough knowledge and understanding of job skills required to be successful in the industry.

What You'll Learn

Key competencies developed through this program

Auto-populated·from NSX Competency Framework

Mastery: developing (Level 2)(based on Certification)

  • Client and engineering stakeholder meetings — communicate project goals, site constraints, and design options clearly with reduced oversight on mid-scale commercial or institutional projects.
  • Site analysis data including drainage, soil conditions, and structure locations — synthesize findings into coherent sections of environmental reports for land development proposals.
  • Landscape construction inspections — evaluate material quality and workmanship against project specifications during site visits and provide written compliance documentation.
  • Site plans, grading drawings, and planting plans — prepare complete construction document sets for routine residential and small commercial landscape projects.
  • Existing land features and natural systems — integrate topography, native vegetation, and water management infrastructure into cohesive design schemes with limited direction.
  • CAD and desktop publishing software — produce professional-grade graphic presentations and specification sheets for client review meetings.
  • GIS and database tools — analyze spatial and environmental datasets to inform site selection and regulatory compliance assessments independently.
  • Cost estimates and project schedules — develop accurate budget projections and phasing plans for landscape projects in the $250K–$1M range.
  • Collaboration with architects and civil engineers — coordinate design intent across disciplines to resolve site-structure conflicts on mixed-use development projects.
  • Critical thinking and systems analysis — evaluate alternative design solutions against performance, aesthetic, and regulatory criteria to recommend preferred approaches to project managers.
