They maintain current knowledge of safety, health, and environmental concepts and may be responsible for defining and utilizing an organization’s safety management systems. Their regular activities may also include risk management, incident investigation, emergency preparedness, identifying the business case for safety, and more.

SMP credential holders are experienced professionals whose job duties involve applying safety management skills. They maintain current knowledge of safety, health, and environmental concepts and may be responsible for defining and utilizing an organization’s safety management systems. Their regular activities may also include risk management, incident investigation, emergency preparedness, identifying the business case for safety, and more. Working part-time or full-time in occupational health or safety with a minimum 35% of job tasks related to the management of safety related programs, processes, procedures, and/or personnel At least 10 years of experience in occupational health or safety Passing the SMP examination Maintenance of certification Annual renewal fee Recertification requirements Applicants must also disclose if they have been convicted of criminal offenses or have had a professional license or credential suspended, revoked, or placed under probation. BCSP keeps this information confidential but may deny an application based on these matters.
