Key competencies developed through this program

Auto-populated·from NSX Competency Framework

Mastery: emerging (Level 1)(based on Course)

  • Paving machine startup sequence — execute under direct supervision by engaging clutch and moving levers to guide equipment along marked forms on a supervised job site.
  • Hopper and tank filling — load asphalt or other paving materials into machine hoppers following crew leader instructions on an active paving crew.
  • Equipment controls — identify and operate basic levers and switches under close oversight to maintain a steady material flow during initial training shifts.
  • Paving material distribution — observe spread patterns and flag low spots for experienced crew members to address during routine resurfacing work.
  • Hand tools and basic maintenance supplies — assist in cleaning and lubricating machine components under direct guidance at the end of each shift.
  • Equipment setup procedures — support senior operators in assembling and positioning paving equipment at the start of a job site assignment.
  • Truck dumping coordination — follow verbal signals from a lead operator to position dump trucks for consistent material delivery into the paver hopper.
  • Job site safety protocols — apply standard PPE requirements and hazard-awareness practices while working around moving paving equipment.
  • Machine malfunction recognition — identify and immediately report unusual sounds, vibrations, or control irregularities to a supervisor during equipment operation.
  • Equipment transport basics — assist in driving or loading machines onto truck trailers under direct instruction for short hauls between nearby job sites.
